Tome of Polymorph: White Polar Bear, Monkey, and Porcupine

New Polymorphs for Mages

You might already know there are several new items available for nearly every class but of 7.0.3 Mages can now add a monkey AND a white polar bear to their available Polymorphs!

Tome of Polymorph: Monkey is dropping from Hozen mobs in The Jade Forest.

Tome of Polymorph: Monkey

Tome of Polymorph: Polar Bear Cub from Arctic Grizzly in Dragonblight.

Tome of Polymorph: Polar Bear Cub

Tome of Polymorph: Porcupine from Pandaren porcupines.  I suggest the Needleback Porcupines here in the Dread Waste.

Tome of Polymorph: Porcupine

This is a replacement to the removed glyph Charred Glyph that used to modify your polymorph to the porcupine prior to 6.0.2.

Horde – Troll. Berserk increases your spell casting and melee speed,
they do more damage against beasts (which is nice for leveling)
and their Voodoo Shuffle (reduced duration of movement impairing effects).

Blue – Sparkling Ocean Sapphire – +40 Spirit
Yellow/Blue – Zen Dream Emerald – +20 Mastery Rating and +20 Spirit
Red/Yellow/Blue – Nightmare Tear – +10 All Stats

VI. Stats/Reforging

Intellect is the most important Restoration stat. Spirit controls mana regen and you should prioritize it if you are having mana problems. Haste Cap (916) OR (2005) which gives an extra Riptide tick. Other than Spirit other stats are roughly equal but have different effects – Haste will make you more powerful but burn more mana, Crit will restore some mana and also boost healing but by less than Haste, and Mastery will boost your heals on people who are more injured.

Reforge to Spirit until your mana feels comfortable for the content you’re doing. If you can get to a Haste cap, reforge Mastery and Crit to Haste.

VII. Spell Rotation

We don’t have a “rotation”, of course. But here’s some basics on how to keep people from keeling over:

Tank Healing
Keep Earth Shield on the tank. Use Riptide on cooldown, Healing Wave any time you don’t need to use something bigger (you CAN spam this, most likely), Greater Healing Wave if the tank’s taking serious damage, and Healing Surge only if you are sure that the extra second to cast Greater Healing Wave will kill the tank. Bear in mind that Riptide will proc an effect making both your Healing Wave spells much quicker for two casts.

Raid / Group Healing
Use Earth Shield on the tank anyway. Use Healing Wave to spot heal when the group or raid isn’t taking much damage. If the damage starts coming in heavy, use Healing Rain for mass group damage (warning, expensive) or Chain Heal any time it will heal 3 or more targets. Use Riptide on cooldown, and ask your raid leader if you should be keeping it rolling on the tank for the 10% health buff.

Totems and Buffs – Totems should be Healing Stream, Stoneskin, Flametongue, Wrath of Air. Keep Earth Living Weapon on your weapon, and keep Water Shield on yourself. If you’re with another shaman, coordinate your totems!

Cooldowns – Remember you can use Unleash Elements to buff your next spell (although it’s not that powerful), and Nature’s Swiftness to make it instant. Spiritwalker’s Grace is also vital if you need to move – you can still cast whilst moving. Spirit Link Totem is a save-the-group spell, particularly in 5-mans – it averages out health across the group, and will save a tank or other person taking heavy damage. Oh, and remember Bloodlust / Heroism – work with your raid leader in a raid to choose the best time to cast it.

VIII. Gear

With LFR and LFG gear is really quite easily attainable. Check out the Justice & Valor Point vendors both obtainable by running dungeons. Also have a look at crafting professions. Tailors and leather workers are able to make level 378 PVP gear for cloth, leather, and mail wearer’s I would assume blacksmith can for plate wearers as well.

Changes in Patch 4.3

  • Flametongue Weapon no longer increases spell damage. It now increases all non-physical damage done by the wielder by 5%.
  • Lightning Bolt has a new spell effect.
  • Wind Shear now has a 25-second base cooldown, up from 6 seconds.

Shaman Tier 13 Set Bonuses

Restoration, 2P — After using Mana Tide Totem, the cost of your healing spells are reduced by 25% for 15 sec.

Restoration, 4P — Increases the duration of Spiritwalker’s Grace by 5 sec, and you gain 30% haste while Spiritwalker’s grace is active.

VI. Stats/Reforging

Most important stat is Agility followed by Hit or Spirit to the spell hit cap 1742 (1639 for Draenai). Afterwards it’s Expertise, Mastery, followed by Crit and Haste.

When reforging start with reforging to spell hit cap then reforge to Expertise cap (541) then Mastery and if you have any left go with Crit and Haste.

VII. Spell Rotation

For many classes if not all DPS, Cataclysm has changed the way we spell cast from a rotation system to a priority system – use whichever ability is highest priority and available.

Top Priority – Lay a Searing totem down if there isn’t one down already. Cast Storm Strike if it’s available.

Second Priority – Cast Lava Lash if it’s available.

Third Priority – Cast Lightning Bolt if you have 5 stacks of Maelstrom Weapon. Cast Flame Shock if Unleash Flame is active.

Fourth Priority – Cast Unleash Elements if it’s available. If that’s not available, use Earth Shock.

Totems – Unless your leader tells you otherwise, use Earth: Strength of Earth, Air: Windfury, Water: Healing Stream, Fire: Searing.

Buffs – Keep Windfury on your Main Hand Weapon and Flametongue Weapon on your Offhand weapon and Lightning Shield active at all times.

Cooldowns – Use Feral Spirit whenever it’s off cooldown.

AOE – Drop Magma Totem, then Flame Shock on an opponent, then Lava Lash, then Fire Nova. For added power, use Unleash Elements before Lava Lash, and put Flame Shock on additional opponents whilst Lava Lash cools down.

VIII.

  • Improved Lava Lash now causes Lava Lash to spread a Flame Shock debuff from the target to up to 4 nearby targets. This excludes crowd-controlled targets and those who already have a Flame Shock debuff from the shaman.
  • Improved Lava Lash no longer increases base Lava Lash damage by 15/30%. This increase has been rolled into the base Lava Lash skill.
  • Mental Quickness has been redesigned. Instead of granting the shaman spell power, Mental Quickness now causes Enhancement shaman spells to behave as though the shaman has spell power equal to 55% of attack power. Enhancement shaman spells no longer benefit from spell power from other sources.

Shaman Tier 13 Set Bonuses

Enhancement, 2P — While you have any stacks of Maelstrom Weapon, your Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, and healing spells deal 20% more healing or damage.

Enhancement, 4P — Your Feral Spirits have a 45% chance to grant you a charge of Maelstrom Weapon each time they deal damage.

Yellow/Blue – Lightning Dream Emerald – +20 Haste Rating and +20 Hit Rating
Red/Yellow/Blue – Nightmare Tear – +10 All Stats OR Quick Cogwheel – +208 Haste Rating

VI. Stats/Reforging

The most important stat for an Elemental Shaman is of course Intellect followed by Hit or Spirit to the cap (1742) you need cap or over then Haste and Mastery. Reforge Spirit to the hit cap, then reforge to Haste. Reforge from hit above the cap first, if you have any, then Crit.

VII. Spell Rotation

Like most DPS classes in Cataclysm, Elemental shamans don’t have a fixed rotation any more. Instead, we have priority system – use whichever ability is highest-priority and available.

Top Priority – Put down a Fire totem if one isn’t down already. If the target doesn’t have a Flame Shock Damage over Time on it, apply one.

Second Priority – Cast Lava Burst if it procs. Cast Earth Shock if it doesn’t, and if you have 8 or 9 Lightning Shield stacks.

Third Priority – If you have nothing else to do, cast Lightning Bolt.

Totems – Unless your raid/group leader tells you otherwise, use Earth: Stoneskin, Air: Wrath of Air, Water: Healing Stream, Fire: Searing.

Buffs – Keep Flametongue Weapon and Lightning Shield active at all times.

Cooldowns – Use Fire Elemental Totem whenever possible and when the mob will survive long enough to outlive its duration. Use Elemental Mastery whenever it’s off cooldown. Use Spiritwalker’s Grace if you’re about to have 10 sec or more of constant movement.
Advanced tips: Fire Elemental Totem is best cast when you have a Spellpower proc. Flame Shock is best cast when the FS DOT has about 2 sec left to run. See the MMO Champion guide, in Links, for more.

AOE – Cast Earthquake where the mobs are tanked. Then spam Chain Lightning, and use Fulmination whenever you reach 9 charges.

VIII.

Elemental, 2P — Elemental Mastery also grants you 400 mastery rating 15 sec.

Elemental, 4P — Each time Elemental Overload triggers, you gain 200 haste rating for 4 sec, stacking up to 3 times.

4.3 Guide Arcane Mage: Spell Rotation, Stats, Glyphs, Gems

Updated from the recent 4.2 guide this article will guide you to a PVE high DPS Arcane Mage spec — Feel that energy crackling, thats your targets face melting! Complete with suggested talents build, stats – reforging, glyphs, enchants, gems, gear, and spell rotation for the highest DPS.

I. Introduction
II. Talents
III. Glyphs
IV. Enchants
V. Gems
VI. Stats/Reforging
VII. Spell Rotation
VIII. Gear

I. Introduction

Alliance – Worgen. 1% crit + movement speed.
Horde – Troll. Berserking equals two extra ticks for Combustion and one for Living Bomb.

Arcane Benefits:

  • Extremely high damage
  • Simple rotation
  • Low hit cap
  • Provides good raid utility
  • Missile Barrage is awesome

Arcane drawbacks:

  • Highly dependent on timely procs for mana efficiency
  • Cannot sustain highest DPS rotation
  • Rotation is fairly boring
  • Sub-par AoE
  • Arcane will put out better numbers in fights where there is little movement.

II. Talents

Arcane, a pure DPS spec, versatile but well rounded. For example if your going to be interrupting then invocation or improved [counterspell] is a must have talent. If your going to be doing the CC’n then improved [Polymorph] is a great talent.

Arcane Mage 4.3

III. Glyphs

IV. Enchants

V. Gems

VI. Stats/Reforging

The most important stat for Arcane is Intellect followed by Mastery. Hit cap is 1742. Reforge excess Hit, Crit (worst Arcane stat), and spirit to Haste.

VII. Spell Rotation

For many classes if not all DPS, Cataclysm has changed the way we spell cast from a rotation system to a priority system – use whichever ability is highest priority and available.

You’ll need to know how many arcane blast you can spam before your mana pool hits 30% thats after you pop a mana gem. So hit up a test dummy asap and start from there.

Burn Phase:

When you have your cool downs up, including Evocation, Mirror Image, Arcane Power, and Mana Gem, AND your mana is at max level, then you want to enter your burn phase. At this point you want to spam Arcane Blast until you’ve gone down 12k mana. Pop a mana gem (worth 12k mana), pop Mirror Image and Arcane Power then spam Arcane Blast until your mana reaches 30%. Use Evocation which brings you back to full or nearly full, now you enter the conserve phase.

Conserve Phase:

This comes after your burn phase and again has no set duration on Arcane Blast usage. The point of this phase is to maintain your mana near max levels so you can enter your burn phase sooner. Try not to fish for Arcane Missile procs past four Arcane Blasts, you’ll lose too much mana that way. Arcane Barrage can be shuffled in if no AM procs are available. You can also use Flame Orb to rapidly regenerate mana here. Keep going with this phase until the cooldown remaining on Evocation is equal to the amount of time it’ll take you to burn down to 30% mana. At that point, switch to the burn phase.

Tips: Remember to keep Mage Armor and Arcane Brilliance on yourself! Build up 4 stacks of Arcane Blast, then use Arcane Explosion, refreshing the Arcane Blast stack with Arcane Blast when needed. If the mobs aren’t near enough to Arcane Explosion, alternate Blizzard and Flamestrike instead.

VIII. Gear

Some people may find my gear suggestions lacking others seem to agree that unless your raiding and have access to Firelands gear then Valor, Justice, and/or even Honor point gear is the way to go. You can earn justice points for the first seven regular level 85 dungeons you do each week as well as all heroics. You can earn 150 valor points for the first seven heroics you do for the week. Blizz begins it’s week on Tuesday of course. These vendors can be found in old Town in Stormwind:

Faldren Tillsdale Valor Quartermaster (Item Lvl 397)

Magatha Silverton Justice Quartermaster (Item Lvl 378)
Firehawk Robes 2200jp
Firehawk Leggings 2200jp
Emberflame Bracers 1250jp
Firehawk Gloves 1650jp

* Soothing Brimstone Circle 1250jp
Amulet of Burning Brilliance 1250jp

Matching shoulders and helm Not available without a Firelands Raid token.

* This may be meant for a healer but if you have nothing better this will work and you can reforge the spirit.

Tailor Made:
** Vicious Fireweave Cowl (377)
** Vicious Fireweave Shoulders (377)
** Vicious Fireweave Boots (377)
** Vicious Fireweave Belt (377)

If you PVP you might as well have the complete set made and use the equipment manager to trade gear sets.

** This may be meant for PVP but again these work great if you do not access to better gear. Note: Ruthless Gladiator’s set has a item level of 384 and can purchased using Conquest Points and possibly Honor Points.

Changes in Patch 4.3

Nothing for Arcane!

Mage Tier 13 Set Bonuses

Mage 2 Piece Set Bonus: Your Arcane Blast has a 100% chance, and your Fireball and Frostbolt spells have a 50% chance to grant Stolen Time, increasing your haste rating by 50 for 30 seconds and stacking up to 10 times. When Arcane Power, Combustion, or Icy Veins expires, all stacks of Stolen Time are lost.

Mage 4 Piece Set Bonus: Each stack of Stolen Time also reduces the cooldown of Arcane Power by 7 seconds, Combustion by 4 seconds, and Icy Veins by 6 seconds.

Fire Benefits:

  • Mana isn’t as big of an issue or as important for fire as it is with arcane.
  • Mobility. Fire is able to still dps on the move.
  • Fire relies on Damage over time effects and consists of you keeping them up as much as possible.

Fire Drawbacks:

VI. Stats/Reforging

The most important stat for Fire is Intellect followed by Hit, Haste, and Crit. Hit cap is 1742, once you cap reforge haste (up to 15%) then Crit. Reforge Mastery (worst arcane stat), and Spirit to Haste (up to 15%) then Crit.

VII. Spell Rotation

For many classes if not all DPS, Cataclysm has changed the way we spell cast from a rotation system to a priority system – use whichever ability is highest priority and available.

Keep Molten Armor and Arcane Brilliance up at all times.

Top Priority: If you have at least two DOTs ticking on the target (Ignite, Living Bomb and the Pyroblast DOT), cast Combustion.

Second Priority: Refresh Living Bomb if it needs to be refreshed and cast Flame Orb if it’s available

Third Priority: Cast Pyroblast if Hot Streak has procced, and refresh Critical Mass with Scorch likewise if needed (it shouldn’t be, normally).

Fourth Priority: If you have nothing else to do, cast Fireball, or if you HAVE to move, Scorch. Use Fireball in preference to Scorch.

AOE: For very short-lived targets, use Blast Wave, then Dragon’s Breath, then Flamestrike. For longer-lived targets, use Living Bomb on multiple targets if they will last long enough, then use Blastwave when you can and otherwise spam Flamestrike.

For AOE on elites, you can also simply proceed with your single-target rotation on one of the targets, and use Fire Blast when Impact procs to spread your DOTs to all three targets. In this case, also use Blast Wave when it’s available.

VIII. Gear

Some people may find my gear suggestions lacking others seem to agree that unless your raiding and have access to Firelands gear then Valor, Justice, and/or even Honor point gear is the way to go.
