VI. Stats/Reforging

The most important stat for Fire is Intellect followed by Hit, Haste, and Crit. Hit cap is 1742, once you cap reforge haste (up to 15%) then Crit. Reforge Mastery (worst arcane stat), and Spirit to Haste (up to 15%) then Crit.

VII. Spell Rotation

For many classes if not all DPS, Cataclysm has changed the way we spell cast from a rotation system to a priority system – use whichever ability is highest priority and available.

Keep Molten Armor and Arcane Brilliance up at all times.

Top Priority: If you have at least two DOTs ticking on the target (Ignite, Living Bomb and the Pyroblast DOT), cast Combustion.

Second Priority: Refresh Living Bomb if it needs to be refreshed and cast Flame Orb if it’s available

Third Priority: Cast Pyroblast if Hot Streak has procced, and refresh Critical Mass with Scorch likewise if needed (it shouldn’t be, normally).

Fourth Priority: If you have nothing else to do, cast Fireball, or if you HAVE to move, Scorch. Use Fireball in preference to Scorch.

AOE: For very short-lived targets, use Blast Wave, then Dragon’s Breath, then Flamestrike. For longer-lived targets, use Living Bomb on multiple targets if they will last long enough, then use Blastwave when you can and otherwise spam Flamestrike.

For AOE on elites, you can also simply proceed with your single-target rotation on one of the targets, and use Fire Blast when Impact procs to spread your DOTs to all three targets. In this case, also use Blast Wave when it’s available.

VIII. Gear

Some people may find my gear suggestions lacking others seem to agree that unless your raiding and have access to Firelands gear then Valor, Justice, and/or even Honor point gear is the way to go. You can earn justice points for the first seven regular level 85 dungeons you do each week as well as all heroics. You can earn 150 valor points for the first seven heroics you do for the week. Blizz begins it’s week on Tuesday of course. These vendors can be found in old Town in Stormwind:

Changes in Patch 4.3

Fire Mages get buffed!

• Pyroblast’s initial damage has been increased by approximately 26%, and its damage over time has been increased by approximately 100%.
• Fireball damage has been increased by approximately 17%.
• Living Bomb damage over time has been increased by approximately 10%, and explosion damage has been increased by approximately 120%.

Mage Tier 13 Set Bonuses

Mage 2 Piece Set Bonus: Your Arcane Blast has a 100% chance, and your Fireball and Frostbolt spells have a 50% chance to grant Stolen Time, increasing your haste rating by 50 for 30 seconds and stacking up to 10 times. When Arcane Power, Combustion, or Icy Veins expires, all stacks of Stolen Time are lost.

Mage 4 Piece Set Bonus: Each stack of Stolen Time also reduces the cooldown of Arcane Power by 7 seconds, Combustion by 4 seconds, and Icy Veins by 6 seconds.

VI. Stats/Reforging

Intellect is the most important stat for frost followed by Hit, then Crit, then Haste. Mastery is your worst stat. Crit becomes worse than Haste after you hit 33% Critical Chance. Reforge to the Hit Cap (1,742). If you hit this, then reforge to Crit until 33%, then Haste. Reforge from Mastery (and Spirit if you have any) first. After that, reforge Crit or Haste depending on if you’ve hit 33% Crit.

VII. Spell Rotation

For many classes if not all DPS, Cataclysm has changed the way we spell cast from a rotation system to a priority system – use whichever ability is highest priority and available.

Keep Molten Armor and Arcane Brilliance up at all times and try to keep one stack of Fingers of Frost up at all times.

Top Priority: If it’s off cool down and you have Fingers of Frost, cast Deep Freeze.

Second Priority: Cast Flame Orb and Freeze (from your elemental) whenever they are off cool down.

Third Priority: Cast Frostfire Bolt if Brain Freeze is up. If you have Fingers of Frost, Brain Freeze is not up and Deep Freeze is on cool down, cast Ice Lance.

Fourth Priority: If you have nothing else to do, cast Frostbolt.

Use Icy Veins whenever it’s off cool down for maximum DPS, or save for burn phases if needed. If you need to do a lot of damage in a very short space of time, use your Cold Snap ability to reset all your cool downs after you’ve cast Flame Orb, Freeze, Deep Freeze, and Icy Veins.

VIII. Gear

You’ll need to know how many arcane blast you can spam before your mana pool hits 30% thats after you pop a mana gem. So hit up a test dummy asap and start from there.

Burn Phase:

When you have your cool downs up, including Evocation, Mirror Image, Arcane Power, and Mana Gem, AND your mana is at max level, then you want to enter your burn phase. At this point you want to spam Arcane Blast until you’ve gone down 12k mana. Pop a mana gem (worth 12k mana), pop Mirror Image and Arcane Power then spam Arcane Blast until your mana reaches 30%. Use Evocation which brings you back to full or nearly full, now you enter the conserve phase.

Conserve Phase:

This comes after your burn phase and again has no set duration on Arcane Blast usage. The point of this phase is to maintain your mana near max levels so you can enter your burn phase sooner. Try not to fish for Arcane Missile procs past four Arcane Blasts, you’ll lose too much mana that way. Arcane Barrage can be shuffled in if no AM procs are available. You can also use Flame Orb to rapidly regenerate mana here. Keep going with this phase until the cooldown remaining on Evocation is equal to the amount of time it’ll take you to burn down to 30% mana. At that point, switch to the burn phase.

Tips: Remember to keep Mage Armor and Arcane Brilliance on yourself! Build up 4 stacks of Arcane Blast, then use Arcane Explosion, refreshing the Arcane Blast stack with Arcane Blast when needed. If the mobs aren’t near enough to Arcane Explosion, alternate Blizzard and Flamestrike instead.

Mage 2 Piece Set Bonus: Your Arcane Blast has a 100% chance, and your Fireball and Frostbolt spells have a 50% chance to grant Stolen Time, increasing your haste rating by 50 for 30 seconds and stacking up to 10 times. When Arcane Power, Combustion, or Icy Veins expires, all stacks of Stolen Time are lost.

Mage 4 Piece Set Bonus: Each stack of Stolen Time also reduces the cooldown of Arcane Power by 7 seconds, Combustion by 4 seconds, and Icy Veins by 6 seconds.

If you are starting off in Dalaran, take care of Underbelly Rat in the sewers before you leave town. Then, I suggest the following path.
Fly into Howling Fjord and get:

Devouring Maggot- Howling Fjord, Utgarde Catacombs
Fjord Rat- Howling Fjord
Roach- Howling Fjord
Spider- Howling Fjord , Ahn’kahet: The Old Kingdom, Azjol-Nerub, Drak’Tharon Keep, Naxxramas, The Culling of Stratholme, etc.
While you are in the Howling Fjord, go /love these guys For the To All The Squirrels Who Shared My Life achievement.

Fjord Turkey – Howling Fjord
Fjord Penguin – Howling Fjord coasts
Scalawag Frog – Howling Fjord, Scalawag Point

Then , on your way to Zul’Drak to:
kill Zul’Drak Rat,
and love Arctic Hare

Reports of Snake in GunDrak stop by Grizzly Hills and /love:
Mountain Skunk – Grizzly Hills
Grizzly Squirrel – Grizzly Hills
Several reports of a pack of deer and Mice in this zone near Venture Bay.

Continue north to Storm Peaks and kill

Sholozar Tickbird, there is a flock right in the Nesingwary camp.

before heading into the Nexus to kill

Fly into Hellfire Peninsula and snuff
Adder- Hellfire Peninsula
Scorpion- Hellfire Peninsula

Old World
Use the Portal to get to the old world because that will put you close to:

Moccasin- Swamp of Sorrows
While you are in the swamp anyway, /love Huge Toad

Then, head into the Searing Gorge to:
kill Fire Beetle- Searing Gorge and /love Lava Crab

Finally, go to Westfall for this pest.
